Dear parents/guardians, 12/13/10
On Wednesday, December 15 the grade 6/7 and grade 8 classes will be going bowling at Fairhaven Bowl. We will leave the school at 10:00 am and we will return around 11:50am. The reason we are doing this is to promote active living and to introduce students to a variety of different sports and activities. As the year progresses, we will also be going on other various field trips that promote active living such as wall climbing, golfing, tennis, visiting a fitness centre and going on a canoe trip. The cost for bowling will be $3.00 per child to help cover some of the costs. If you have any question, email us at cattonc@spsd.sk.ca or johnstontre@spsd.sk.ca .
Dawn Marie Wesely-Victim Impact Statement
A victim impact statement is a written statement (could be 2-3 paragraphs or longer) by a victim of the personal harm suffered as a result of the offence. It gives the victim an opportunity not only to say what impact the offence has had on the victim, but also what, in the opinion of the victim, should be done about the matter.
A victim impact statement is given AFTER a person has been convicted and BEFORE the person in sentenced.
Once the defendant has been found guilty, the judge will look at the Victim Impact Statement to help make the correct decision regarding punishment.
1. A primary victim (the person against whom the offence was committed)
2. A family victim (The victim's spouse, parent, sibling etc.
3. A representative of the victim (family friend, counselor, medical )
1). The statement gives the person the chance to put into writing for the judge the IMPACT that the crime has had upon the victim (family, friends).
2). The victim can inform the court of how the offence has affected him or her physically, mentally and otherwise.
1). It is not an opportunity to vent anger at the law enforcement and judicial systems. Respect must always be shown to the judge and the position he/she represents.
2). It is not the time to review the entire case. That’s the prosecutor’s job.
3). It is not a time to be wordy. Avoid repetition. Brevity is important.
4). It is not a time to explode with an emotional outburst at the imposter or be overly dramatic.
5). It is not a time to expect a confession from the imposter or to ask why did you do this? You won’t get an honest answer anyway and the "apology" might work against you if interpreted as remorse.
Written Statement
1). Begin your statement with addressing the court (Your Honor).
2). Organize your thoughts in a MINIMUM of 500 to 600 words.
3). Describe the event in the first paragraph.
4). Describe the injury sustained and how this has impacted your life physically, emotionally, socially (second paragraph).
5). Make a recommendation as to restitution, plus (if desired) a recommendation as to the appropriate sentence. (third paragraph).
6). Make a closing statement --should be a powerful "punch" that will have a lingering affect in the courtroom.
7). Edit carefully--check for content, organization, sentence structure, strong vocabulary, spelling, grammar.

Brightwater Volunteers & Behavior Letter
Brightwater Volunteers
This year, Mr. Johnston’s grade 6/7 class and Mr. Catton’s grade 8 class will be going to Brightwater Outdoor Camp from Wednesday, February 9th to Friday, February 11th, 2011. The cost of the camp will be between $40 and $45 and there will be more information to follow about the camp after the Christmas break. What’s most important now is finding enough parent-volunteers since the success of the camp is dependent on sufficient volunteers. Below, is a list of volunteer roles that need to be filled. If you are able to fill one or more of these roles, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher via email (cattonc@spsd.sk.ca or johnstontre@spsd.sk.ca ). It would be great if we could have the majority of the roles filled prior to Christmas break. Thanks in advance.
Roles:
· Buy groceries-list will be provided
· Haul equipment out to Brightwater Camp-need to have a truck; 15km on highway 219
· Camp cook-need to be there all 3 days; best if 2 people can do it
· Day Supervisors-need to be there all 3 day or part of 3 days (shared duties with someone else); help supervise camp activities
· Night Supervisors- supervise students in cabins
If you are able to commit to the entire 3 days, you roles might be as follows:
· Haul equipment
· Day supervisor
· Night supervisor
If you are able to only commit to evenings, your roles might be as follows:
· Night supervisors
If you are unable to commit to the camp, but would still like to help out, your role might be as follows.

Dear parent/guardians,
Over the last couple weeks, Mr. Catton’s and Mr. Johnston’s class have walked to Tommy Douglas Collegiate to watch a basketball game at the Bowlt Classic and to watch a dance performance put on the grade 10-12 classes. The students’ behavior at the events was great; they really made Fairhaven School proud. Their behavior on the walks to and from Tommy Douglas Collegiate was a different story. Behaviors such as throwing snowballs, wrestling in the snow, pushing each other onto the road, walking on people’s property and a general disrespect for each other and their surroundings were observed. This type of behavior cannot be tolerated especially when many of them are dangerous. This is especially true since the grade 5 and grade 6 classes did the same walk with no problems at all.
Please have a conversation with your child to see if they made any poor decisions on the walks to and from Tommy Douglas Collegiate and about the importance of being a good role model to the younger grades. It is very important that this behavior does not happen again since we have planned on walking to Fairhaven Bowl next Wednesday to go bowling and plan on walking to Tommy Douglas Collegiate in the Spring for various activities and if behaviors do not drastically change, the trips will have to cancelled.

Genocide Research Project
Genocide: The term "genocide" did not exist before 1944. It is a very specific term, referring to violent crimes committed against groups with the intent to destroy the existence of the group
Unfortunately, the Holocaust is not the only genocide to have ever happened. Although the world declared “Never again,” numerous genocides have occurred and are continuing even today. Education and increased awareness of the causes and effects of such events are important; a more complete understanding of why these atrocities occur is necessary to fight against and prevent such incidents from happening again.
Writing Assignment: Research a historical incident of genocidal murder and make a presentation in which you discuss its causes and effects.
Choose one of the following for your topic:
Burma/Myanmar (Current) | Native American (choose one tribe) -Trail of Tears Stalin’s Gulag Other |
Consider the following questions as you take notes for your research:
- What countries were involved?
- When did this happen?
- What group(s) was/were targeted?
- What led up to the violence?
- Were there acts of discrimination/hate crimes prior to the actual killings?
- How did the genocide take place?
- How many people died? (if necessary, find an estimate)
- Explain the aftermath (i.e., How did it affect the country and its population? Are there still problems to this day?)
- What is happening/happened to stop the genocide
- What can you do to help end genocide?
Requirements:
- Include a Works Cited page (Bibliography) that provides information about your sources must be included
- Use at least four sources, printed and web-based
Beginning your research: We will be going to the public library next week
1. Consulting a general reference book such as an encyclopedia is a good place to start, especially if you are completely unfamiliar with your topic.
2. Search for articles on the Internet (be very careful – not all articles that are posted online are reliable)
3. Go to the library and look for books about your topic and time period. Be open to looking through books on general history that may contain sections/chapters specific to your topic. Use indexes and the table of contents section to help you locate useful information.
4. Consult periodicals for useful articles.

- Use the planning chart below to organize your thoughts. This is a complex topic so research is very important. Be sure to understand the topic before you make your presentation.
A VERY IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT PLAGIARISM:
Plagiarism comes from the Latin plagiare, "to kidnap." It is very simply stealing, which is illegal, dishonest, and completely unethical. Using someone else’s words and ideas and passing them off as your own is theft of intellectual property.
Everyone knows that copying someone else’s work word for word is stealing; however, plagiarism extends beyond simply cutting and pasting. Using others’ ideas and not giving credit is also plagiarism. Therefore, it is critical to cite all of your sources properly, because you could unintentionally be taking credit for someone else’s work if you do not provide source information.
